As COVID-19, influenza, and RSV cases rise across the Northern Beaches and Australia, it’s time to take proactive steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. The highly transmissible JN.1 subvariant is driving this surge, and vaccination rates for booster doses remain low.

At South Steyne Medical Centre Manly, our focus is on helping our community stay healthy during these challenging times. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe.

📊 COVID-19 and Respiratory Illnesses on the Northern Beaches

The Northern Beaches community is seeing an increase in respiratory infections, including COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. The JN.1 subvariant spreads faster than earlier variants, putting vulnerable groups at risk.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Residents across Manly and the Northern Beaches who face the highest risks include:

  • Seniors aged 65 and over
  • Residents in aged care facilities
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds

These groups are more likely to experience severe symptoms or complications from infections.

🛡️ How to Protect Yourself

1. Get Vaccinated at South Steyne Medical Centre Manly

Vaccination is your best defense against COVID-19 and influenza. Protect yourself with the latest booster shots and flu vaccines available at our medical centre in Manly.

💡 Tip: Stay up to date with both COVID-19 and flu vaccinations to minimize your risk.

2. Wear a Mask in Crowded Spaces

Whether you’re commuting on public transport or shopping in busy Northern Beaches centers, wearing a mask can help prevent the spread of viruses.

💡 Tip: Use a high-quality mask, such as an N95, for the best protection.

3. Practice Hand Hygiene

Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer, especially after touching public surfaces in Manly and other Northern Beaches areas.

💡 Tip: Carry hand sanitizer with you for convenience.

4. Test Promptly if You Feel Unwell

If you feel unwell, test immediately for COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses. Early detection helps protect those around you and ensures you receive timely medical care.

💡 Tip: Rapid antigen test kits are readily available—keep a few at home for emergencies.

True or False: All TGA approved rapid antigen tests detect Omicron sub-variants.

Answer: False.

Not all TGA approved rapid antigen tests detect the Omicron variant of COVID-19, but our ones do.

As we learn to live with COVID-19, the development of new Omicron sub-variants is becoming something that we all must adapt to. The TGA advises that only certain RATs are approved to detect Omicron sub-variants.

Keep yourself, your family, and your friends safe by using our TGA approved Omicron sub-variant detecting RATs, with a box of 20 tests available from South Steyne Medical Centre for $100.
