Curious about how to stay safe this summer? Check below!

We here at South Steyne Medical Centre love getting in the sun, but it’s important to stay safe!

The Cancer Council Australia is running a fantastic initiative this week, National Skin Cancer Action Week. So as part of that we thought we would share some good tips for being sun safe.

Here are the best ways to keep safe in the sun this summer:

SLIP on some sun-protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible.

SLOP on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30 (or higher) sunscreen. Put it on 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun.

SLAP on a hat – broad brim or legionnaire style to protect your face, head, neck and ears.

SEEK shade.

SLIDE on some sunglasses – make sure they meet Australian Standards.

Suicide is one of Australia’s silent killers. In 2019 there were an estimated 3300 deaths due to suicide.

This number is most likely lower as suicide still carries a stigma and so goes under-reported. Unfortunately this stigma is part of why suicide is prevalent within our society.

Sock it to Suicide day is an initiative that seeks to bring suicide out of the shadows in a safe and inclusive way.

This week get your most colourful pair of socks on and show your true colours! To learn more about the initiative please follow the link below.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills 18.6 million people every year and kills more people than cancer, respiratory disease and HIV.

CVD is largely the result of lifestyle factors which is good news, because these are things that with the right tools and information we can control in our own lives.

Cardiovascular disease may seem like an insurmountable obstacle or maybe something that seems inevitable.

However, by taking proactive measures in your health you can greatly reduce your risk of CVD.

Have a chat to one of our doctors about CVD if you are concerned, or if you would like to learn more about the initiative click here.

You can view the Souh Steyne Medical Centre doctor team here.

You never know what someone is going through.

However, asking them how they are going might make a huge difference for them.

R U OK? Day encourages all of us to check in with those around us. Clearly suicide is a large problem in Australia. with an average of 8 per day in 2018.

Let’s support one another by checking in. It can seem like just a little, but it may go a huge way in saving someone’s life.
